Quebec's National Assembly unanimously passed a motion backing the right to host a Canadiens watch party in the Outaouais region.

Wassim Aboutanes, the organizer, said the NHL had blocked the event, citing a territorial rule: each team controls events held within 80 kilometres of its arena.

Because the Outaouais sits inside the Bell Centre region, the league argued the watch party fell within the Canadiens' own protected zone.

The fight reached the legislature on Tuesday, where members from every party rose to support the organizers.

"A motion like this sends a clear message: fans should not be punished for loving their team," one minister told the chamber.

Aboutanes said he was stunned by the unanimous vote. "We just wanted a room, a screen, and a few hundred neighbours," he said.

The NHL has not said whether it will revisit the ruling, noting only that the territorial rule applies league-wide and protects local broadcast and ticket revenue.

For now, the motion carries no legal force, so the dispute over the rule is what supporters say they will watch next.

Fans had hoped to gather for the Eastern Conference final, a once-in-a-generation run for the Montreal team.
